Bridget Riley: The Power of Looking (online)

Join Lucy Askew, Chief Curator, Modern and Contemporary Art, National Galleries of Scotland as she probes further into Bridget Riley’s practice. As well as taking inspiration from phenomena in the natural world, Riley has developed her singular approach to painting through the practice of drawing and her close analysis of the work of other artists. In this illustrated talk, Lucy Askew will consider the genesis of Riley’s abstract painting and the many areas of enquiry that continue to inform Riley’s exploration of perception.

Lucy Askew previously held curatorial roles at Tate and the Courtauld Art Gallery. She has curated numerous exhibitions, including those devoted to the work of Edvard Munch, Louise Bourgeois and Jenny Saville. In 2016 she began working with Bridget Riley to curate the artist’s retrospective exhibition shown at National Galleries of Scotland in 2019, and which travelled to Hayward Gallery, London. She is a member of the Board of Trustees of The Common Guild, Glasgow, and of the Edinburgh Art Festival.
