Volunteering is one of the quiet strengths of village life. It keeps community services running, supports vulnerable residents, and adds colour and energy to our shared spaces. Without the time and dedication of volunteers, many of the activities, events, and groups we value simply would not exist. From organising local festivals to serving tea at community centres, volunteers are often the people who make things happen behind the scenes.

But the benefits don’t just flow one way. For the volunteer, giving time can be immensely rewarding. It offers the chance to meet new people, discover hidden talents, and feel part of something bigger. Research also shows that volunteering can improve mental wellbeing, reduce loneliness, and even encourage us to stay more active. In short, by helping others, we often end up helping ourselves too.
Whether you can spare a regular slot or just an occasional hour, there are many opportunities in Cranleigh to get involved. Here are 10 ways you could make a difference:
1. Cranleigh Arts Centre – volunteer as a steward, assist with the box office, or support cultural events-[email protected]
2. Knowle Park – join regular volunteer sessions helping to maintain the park – [email protected]

3. Cranleigh Repair Café – good at repairing small electricals, clothes, toys or tools?
[email protected]
4. Cranleigh Scouts and Guides – encourage young people through outdoor adventures, skills, and teamwork – girlguiding.org.uk – scouts.org.uk

These are just a starting point – countless other clubs, churches, sports teams, and charities also rely on volunteers. The good news is that volunteering doesn’t have to be a huge commitment. A couple of hours, a friendly chat, or a willingness to lend a hand can have real impact.
When we give our time, we not only strengthen the fabric of our village but also enrich our own lives. Perhaps one of these 10 opportunities could be your way of giving back and gaining something valuable in return.
