Walking into Wellbeing

In her monthly wellbeing column, Penny Lynch reminds us that some of the best things for our health cost nothing at all. This month: the simple, restorative pleasure of a walk.

There is something wonderfully restorative about stepping outside and taking a walk. Whether it’s a gentle stroll through the park or a longer ramble along the many footpaths surrounding us, spending time in nature is one of the simplest ways we can improve both our physical and mental wellbeing.

Taking a walk with family and friends is very good for us, in body and in mind.

Research has consistently shown that walking outdoors can help reduce stress, improve mood, lower blood pressure and boost overall fitness. Even just 20 or 30 minutes surrounded by greenery can leave us feeling calmer, more energised and better able to cope with the demands of everyday life. Walking is also a low-impact form of exercise, making it suitable for people of all ages and of many different levels of fitness.

Beauty on our doorstep

We are fortunate to live in an area blessed with an abundance of beautiful countryside. The network of local footpaths and trails offers endless opportunities to explore fields, woodland and open spaces. For those who enjoy a little adventure, there are always new routes to discover, with the changing of the seasons bringing fresh colours, wildlife and scenery throughout the year.

Of course, not everyone wants, or is able, to venture further afield. That’s where Knowle Park comes into its own. Right in the heart of Cranleigh, it provides a welcoming green space that is accessible to everyone. Whether you’re enjoying a gentle walk, meeting friends for a chat, taking grandchildren to play, or simply sitting on a bench to enjoy the fresh air, the park offers all the benefits of being outdoors without needing to travel far.

Slow down and notice

Walking doesn’t have to be about covering miles or reaching a destination. Sometimes the greatest benefit comes simply from slowing down, noticing the birdsong, watching the leaves move in the breeze or exchanging a friendly greeting with someone along the way. Every step outdoors is an investment in our health and happiness.

So, whether you choose to explore our wonderful local trails or enjoy a stroll around Knowle Park, make time to walk this month. Nature is right on our doorstep, and the benefits are waiting to be discovered.
