Hesketh Close Residents Association Christmas Tree Lights

by Lynn Cansell

On Monday 3 December 2025 the residents of Hesketh Close gathered together to welcome The Right Honourable Mayor of Waverley, Penny Rivers and her consort, Paul Rivers to switch on the Christmas Tree lights. Jane, Chair of the Residents Association, greeted and thanked the Mayor and her husband for taking time out of their busy schedule to join us on this occasion.

A thoroughly enjoyable evening ensued, with a table laden with party food and drinks. This was the inaugural lighting of an outdoor tree, which the Mayor switched on, luckily the rain held off, as all gathered outside. They then joined in the party, whilst the Mead Road Players entertained everyone with Christmas carols and music.

Penny then made a short speech and read a specially selected carol. Afterwards she and her husband spent time chatting with all residents and upon leaving Penny was presented with a Christmas posy and a bottle of fine wine to be raffled by one of her favourite charities.

The Residents Committee would like to thank local businesses for their generous donations of the tree, food and wine towards the celebration.  A special thanks to the music group for their musical entertainment. The photos were taken by some of our residents.

Hesketh Close is a small complex for retired residents who live in their own homes and set within spacious grounds, a short walk from the village with bus stops to Guildford and Horsham. Formerly a school until 1972 it was purchased in 1974 by Retirement Lease Housing Association. Now comprising 29 flats and bungalows.  More information regarding its previous history can be found in an article dated 1 November 2020 Joy of Cranleigh.
