July 2018 – Keep your Garden Running

As the heat of the season rises, summer weather is not only tough on gardeners but on our plants as well. The good news is the heat won’t last forever. In the meantime why not try these tips for keeping your garden running.

  • Put saucer trays filled with water under potted plants, and allow them to soak it up from the bottom. Don’t allow the plants to sit in water for long periods of time.
  • Plants can struggle in heat waves, so keep an eye on them for signs of strain. Look out for drooping plants and brown leaves. Plants with these signs can be helped with a deep drink of water.
  • It’s important to pay attention to newly planted plants during a heat wave or periods of drought. They need to be watered more often, and never allowed to dry out.
  • Don’t use sprinklers during the warmest part of the day as most of the water will evaporate before it reaches the ground. If you must water during the day, water manually at the base of the plant.
