The place to explore and share memories of Cranleigh life, past and present – by Howard Barratt
Since the Autumn a team of volunteers has been working together in the community to create an ongoing digital archive which is recording the growth of Cranleigh from St Nicholas Church built in 1170 to the present day, the Carnival. The website goes live from the 1 June so please enjoy using it!
The MyCranleigh site can be found here: https://mycranleigh.org.uk/
Over the next few years, the archive will continue to grow with contributions from the community and record today’s memories for future generations to use.
Why have we done it?
My Cranleigh is part of the old Cottage Hospital project. During the consultation period on the project, we often received feedback asking for more easily accessible information on the growth of Cranleigh.
The website is interactive, and we encourage you to add your own comments and memories about the posts. We are looking for people to write their own posts as well.
We have also started to create short video recollections of life in Cranleigh, which record residents’ memories of what life was like, living in Cranleigh over the years. The memories are fascinating to listen to, for example how the High Street has changed over the past 50 years from being able to buy everything from chicken feed to clothes. People travelled to Cranleigh to come shopping for the day.
Over the next few months, we will add further recollections so please contact us if you have any stories you would like to share with us.
We have been working closely with local historians Joy Horn and Michael Miller and we thank them for their support of the project.
The launch of the My Cranleigh database is good news. These well-researched, succinct and easily accessible posts should prove an enjoyable source of information. – Joy Horn
We look forward to meeting you at the Carnival on Saturday 28 June.
