Cranleigh Amateur Swimming Club – Open Meet

Lots of excitement as Cranleigh ASC hosted the Cranleigh Open meet on 11 June at Cranleigh Leisure Centre. Over Sunday evening the pool was transformed to a competition environment with timing pads, timing boards and diving blocks. Early on Sunday morning nervous and excited swimmers, parents and officials clad in white, descended on the Leisure Centre from 8 clubs in Surrey, all hoping to swim Personal Bests and possibly take home a medal! Cranleigh ASC was delighted to welcome and compete against swimmers from Dorking SC, Wandsworth SC, Box Hill SC, Seabyrd, Farnham SC, Wey Valley SC and Leatherhead SC.

Cranleigh Open Meet had a range of 11 events to choose including 400m Freestyle, 200m of each stroke including Butterfly, Individual Medleys and 50m sprints, for swimmers aged from 9 to 19. The atmosphere was phenomenal with swimmers cheering and supporting their team members and enjoying time together. This was the first Open Meet with Cranleigh’s new Chairlady, Carla Stevens, at the helm and she was thrilled with the success . . . ’it was great to see such team spirit from the swimmers, parents and clubs. Many thanks to all the officials and volunteers who helped us make the day a success.’

Coach David Whorlow was very pleased with the results from all Cranleigh ASC swimmers, including 22 Gold Medals across 11 swimmers, showing the hard work in training has truly paid off. He said, ‘it was good to see so many Cranleigh swimmers competing on Sunday with everyone coping brilliantly against strong competition from visiting clubs. I was very proud with how well all the swimmers performed.’

It was nice to see our 18+ club members continuing to set the standards high for the younger swimmers to aspire to, with club records from Sam Westerman (50 Fly) and Jasmin Arciero (200 Individual medley). Special mentions should go to our rising star 12 year old Sophie Moore who won 5 Gold Medals and our other age group winners Juliette Small (14), Jasmin (19), Oliver Stone (15). Well done all swimmers.
